Moscow’s Victory Day parade kicked off at the Red Square on Sunday, marking the 76th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the nation ahead of the parade.

"Congratulations on the day, which was and will be sacred for Russia, for our nation. It is our day with regard to kinship relations with those, who destroyed Nazism. It is ours as we are the descendants of the generation of the victors - the generation we honour and are proud of," said the president.

This year more than 12,000 servicemen, 190 pieces of military equipment, and 76 aircraft take part in the parade. A number of commemorative events celebrating the 76th anniversary of Nazi Germany's surrender and the end of the Second World War take place in 28 Russian cities.
